Gerald (Jerry)'s Story

There's a lot I could talk about , but the first thing I want to say is that I had left so many friends behind, and wish that I had kept in touch with so many of them. I was going to delete the rest of my story, but I have decided to add this instead. I can only say that I am deeply sorry for leaving so many friends behind as I started the next chapter of my life. My regrets now are that I never changed my life sooner, to have righted many wrongs, apologized to many I may have hurt, and at times never showed more consideration and love for those that felt more for me, than being just a friend. Unfortunately I found out too late just how much a few individuals really did care for me, and I was too blind and immature to realize it, and therefore ruined such friendships and relationships. After graduating, I served four years in the Marine Corps, including a year in Viet Nam, along with the opportunity to visit and see 11 countries. This was truly a wonderful gift, to have seen how people live and survive in other countries. It made me respect our country, and what we have, and so much to be thankful for. There were times that I wondered if my time served had any meaning, and a good friend of mine, John Lucas, sent the following quote to me, and I'd like to share it. "What is a Veteran? A "Veteran" - whether active duty, discharged, retired, or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to, and including his life." That is an Honor...Expand for more
. And there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact. But, during the past 40 years, after a year or two of "trying to find myself" after leaving the Marine Corps, I eventually got into construction, and building and property maintenance. From this, I learned so much, appliance repair, carpentry, drywall, electrical, plumbing, roofing HVAC, and much more. My wife of almost 20 years, passed away Nov. 1997. I can't even begin to explain what having such a loss will teach you about life. Not only about the loss of a loved one, but also the loss of so many friends. So, as you can see, I have been quite busy during my years since graduation. I found my niche with hand tools and shop equipment and learning the trades. It proved to be quite a learning period as well enable me to build, and be able to fix and repair most anything and everything at home or on the job. It's been a great experience, but had to hang up the tools due to health. I have lived in Virginia since 1972, and have resided in Virginia Beach since 1980 in the same home. So, as of this year, I find myself retired and on disability. With my free time now, I seek ways to pass the time, and occasionally remember some good old days when life seemed to go on forever. I am sincerely sorry for not having kept in touch with so many friends from school. That is why I am glad to have come across the classmates website, and look forward to hopefully re-establish some friendships long passed. I hope you have enjoyed reading my story.
